How Laser Cutting in Los Angeles Works

Starting Your Project

Laser cutting begins with a digital design created in software such as Adobe Illustrator, Rhino, or another CAD or vector-based program.

The file tells the laser where to cut, score, or engrave. Your material is placed on the laser bed and the machine settings are adjusted according to the material and thickness.

You can think of the process somewhat like printing, except instead of depositing ink, the laser follows the geometry in your file.

Vector lines can be used to cut through or score a material, while raster engraving removes material from the surface to create graphics, patterns, text, or images without cutting completely through the piece.

How Our Laser Cutting Pricing Works

Wondering whether your project will cost $100 or several thousand dollars? The biggest factor is usually how much machine time the design requires.

Fabberz charges based on the amount of time your project runs on the laser. Designs with fewer or simpler cut paths generally take less time and therefore cost less, although all projects are subject to our $100 minimum order.

Material also affects cutting speed. The same design may cut very quickly in paper but require considerably more time in plywood or acrylic.

Additional charges may apply for materials, file preparation, material preparation, custom jigs, or other project-specific requirements.

The examples below can help give you a general idea of how our pricing works. They are provided for reference only. Final pricing is based on the actual file, material, thickness, quantity, and estimated machine time.

Frequently Asked Questions about our Laser Cutting Services in Los Angeles

General Questions

Q: What materials can you laser cut or engrave?
A: We work with a wide range of laser-compatible materials, including acrylic, plywood, wood, paper, cardboard, fabric, leather, felt, and select plastics up to approximately 1/4" thick. We can also create permanent black markings on many uncoated metals. Certain materials, including PVC and polycarbonate, cannot be processed safely. See our Material Compatibility guide for more information.

Q: Can I provide my own material for laser cutting?
A: Yes. We stock a selection of commonly used materials, but you are also welcome to provide your own. Client-supplied materials must be compatible with our laser equipment, so please review our Material Compatibility guide before sending anything unusual.

Q: What is the largest size you can laser cut?
A: Our standard cutting area is 18" x 32". Larger designs can often be divided into multiple sections and assembled afterward. If your project exceeds our cutting area, send us your files and we can recommend the best approach.

Q: Do your laser cutting services in Los Angeles include engraving?
A: Yes. Our laser cutting services for Los Angeles projects also include laser engraving and marking. We can engrave detailed text, logos, patterns, artwork, and graphics into materials such as wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and more. We can also create permanent black markings on many uncoated metals.

Q: What kinds of projects do you typically laser cut?
A: We work on everything from architectural models and prototypes to signage, stencils, packaging, artwork, fashion components, templates, product parts, and small production runs. If you are unsure whether laser cutting is the right process for your project, send us your design and we can take a look.

Design and File Preparation

Q: What file formats do you accept for laser cutting?
A: We accept .AI, .3DM, .DWG, .SVG, .PDF, and .DXF files. Vector files are generally best for laser cutting. If your design is not production-ready, we also offer file preparation services at $80/hour.

Q: How do I prepare a file for laser cutting?
A: Visit our dedicated File Prep page for templates and step-by-step instructions. Because laser cutting is priced primarily by machine time, simplifying unnecessary lines or geometry can sometimes reduce the cost of your project.

Q: Can you prepare my laser cutting file for me?
A: Yes. You do not need to know Illustrator, Rhino, or CAD software to work with us. We can clean up existing artwork, convert files, create cut paths, or help turn your design into a production-ready laser cutting file.

Q: Can you laser cut from a sketch or image?
A: In many cases, yes. A sketch, photograph, or non-vector image may need to be converted into a production-ready vector file first. Send us what you have and we can determine how much file preparation is required.

Pricing and Turnaround

Q: How much do laser cutting services in Los Angeles cost?
A: Our pricing is based primarily on the amount of time your project takes to run on the laser. Material thickness, engraving, quantity, preparation, and design complexity can also affect the final price. Our minimum order is $100. Submit your project through the Get Quote form for exact pricing.

Q: What is your turnaround time for Los Angeles laser cutting projects?
A: Standard turnaround is typically 4–7 business days. Expedited service is typically available in 2–3 business days, depending on the project and current production schedule.

Q: Do you offer expedited laser cutting?
A: Yes. If you are working on a tight deadline, let us know when requesting your quote. Expedited production is typically 2–3 business days when capacity allows.

Q: Is there a minimum order?
A: Yes. Our minimum laser cutting order is $100. We work with projects ranging from individual prototypes and samples to larger production runs.

Q: Can you handle production quantities as well as prototypes?
A: Yes. Our laser cutting services in Los Angeles can be used for one-off prototypes, short runs, and repeat production. If you need a larger quantity, include the total number of pieces when requesting a quote so we can price the project efficiently.

Q: How do I pay for my project?
A: We send invoices electronically by email, and payment can be completed online. We do not accept cash or checks.

Q: When is payment due?
A: If we are supplying materials for your project, payment is required before production begins. If you provide your own materials, you will typically receive an invoice once production is complete, and payment must be received before the finished order is released.
