Our team took turns to head a few blocks away to check out the 3D Print expo at the Jacob Javitz Center in New York City. The print show highlighted the emerging industry of 3D Printing and showcased many up and coming companies and organizations who are pushing the boundaries of creativity and functionality. Check out a few of our favorite items at the Expo.
This July, the FABberz Learn + Design + Make workshop division is collaborating with Google Ideas at FABberz lab.nyc. Google will be bringing 23 middle school students on a technology field trip to the lab. The students will learn about digital fabrication and its connection to the tech world. Teams will form to customize wooden shelving structures using laser cutting and etching. The FABberz To-Go iPhone app along with scanning and live trace techniques will be implemented in order to create laser templates that the students will cut, etch, and take home with them. Stay tuned for photos of the workshop and student creations!
This is the last call for registration to this weekend's tectonic tiles workshop at FABberz lab.nyc (Saturday and Sunday). The workshop will explore different tiling methods used by M.C. Escher, and introduce parametric tile creation using Rhino + Grasshopper. Tile molds will be laser cut and casted in plaster, and participants will leave the 2 day workshop with their own fabricated tiles. Included in the $175 workshop fee is a 2-hour laser cutting FABpass which will never expire! Some Rhino experience is recommended, and for those who wish to be introduced to Rhino for the first time, we suggest attending the optional rhino introduction on Friday, April 15th, from 6:30pm - 9:30pm ($50).
This was the last day of Dia Phase 1 Workshop in Rio. It was an incredible opportunity to exchange ideas and knowledge. The teams presented excellent projects and were given feedback for their REWARD BRIEF & DIA BRIEF proposals. One team will have the chance to go to the AA (Architectural Association) Visiting School Workshop in Sao Paulo in July - this will be announced later in the week.
Today was the last opportunity to fabricate the projects. The teams worked hard at translating their digital ideas into physical prototypes. Plaster and concrete were used as "fill" material for sewn fabric sacks. Each group had a different strategy for controlling material thickness - a key issue in the project development. Sewn points and lines, wires, and gravity itself were explored as ways to parametrize the process.
Today, many things happened at the fabrication lab in Botafogo. Some teams finished their projects in Rhino + Grasshopper and decided on specific variation for laser cutting. Grilling was used as the primary fabrication method, and materials included MDF, Polypropylene, or a combination of both. Students also began to sew molds for fabric form prototypes which would become tests for their DIA brief proposals.
Everybody already knows about all the instructions for each project. They continue to work hard on the "REWARD BRIEF" to create a lamp or a fruit bowl. At the same time, each student begins to dig deeper for the "DIA BRIEF", developing urban strategies for the "favelas".
The Day began with the visit to Providência, a "favela" in Rio de Janeiro. A very heterogeneous place composed with houses, colors, people and many stories. Providência has several social problems, but at the same time, a very different beauty and a great vivacity exist there. The teams are to investigate specific conditions which they identify as being "hot spots for change" on the run up to the 2016 Olympic Games.
In the afternoon, everybody went to Infnet Institute. They continued back into the digital realm of the projects, after a great day in Providência. Raquel and Josiah gave more details about the next stage: Fabrication of a prototype. Each team should fabricate a product that represents their urban strategy in the favela. They should use concrete or plaster and fabric to make the mold.
Today, the teams continued to develop the fruitbowls and lamps. They discovered a new brief and a new challenge. According to the current social and urban context in the favelas and current events like Olympic Games in Rio , they must create something to help the city at this important moment. Bruno Queiroz and Verônica Natividade were invited to start a debate about Irregular settlement intervention in Rio de Janeiro.
One day more of working! Today, the the teams worked at Infnet Institute. The teams began to think about the design of the Fruitbowl or lamp. Changing between hand drawings and Rhino + Grasshopper, this project is a great way of discovering the teams' understand of the tutorials.

FABberz (www.fabberz.com) and LaN (www.livearchitecture.net) are collaborating to organize a series of workshops for students and other interested parties to be held in multiple locations each year, leading up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. While digital production tools have been commercially available for some time, the accessibility to these technologies can now reach far beyond factories and warehouses to our classrooms and homes.
The workshop in Rio de Janeiro will be held at the Infnet Institute as well as PUC-Rio, and it will focus on the social and infrastructural issues facing Sao Paulo & Rio de Janeiro as they prepare to host the international games. This investigation will set the stage for the development of student proposals. The 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics are catalysts with the potential to create unique opportunities for architectural innovation in South America. This scenario serves as a testing ground to sustainable digital manufacturing processes.
Participants will explore digital fabrication techniques and parametric design tools as a means to create their own architectural interface prototypes - ways for residents to become directly involved in design and building. The workshop will kick off with an intensive introduction to parametric design softwares such as Rhino Grasshopper and other Rhino based digital tools. Students will evaluate the user as a parameter for creating design interfaces, and mass customization techniques will emerge as the central strategy in connecting material and experiential processes.
FABberz (www.fabberz.com) and LaN (www.livearchitecture.net) are collaborating to hold a series of workshops for students and other interested parties to be held in multiple locations each year, leading up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. It is not very often that students in a country like Brazil have the opportunity to take part in these kinds of educational events. Generally speaking, this is due to the significant cost associated with setting up a quality workshop. We are really happy and excited to bring our idea to Kickstarter as a way to support students in Brazil. Check out the widget below to see our progress! Click on it to watch the project video, learn more, and pledge to help!
The workshops will collectively form part of a long term, additive research scheme focused on the infusion of user participation in design processes. Participants will explore digital fabrication techniques and parametric design tools as a means to create their own architectural interface prototypes - ways for residents to become directly involved in design and building.
A core line of investigation into social and infrastructural problems in favela (slum) neighborhoods in Sao Paulo & Rio de Janeiro will set the stage for the development of student proposals.
The 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics create a unique opportunity for architectural innovation in South America, and we hope to take advantage of these economic catalysts for the implementation of sustainable digital manufacturing processes in the favelas.
Phase 1 [ Rio de Janeiro - February 2010 ]
FABberz co-founders, Raquel Gallego + Josiah Barnes, along with LaN global director and IaaC Digital tools professor, Luis Fraguada, will head down to Rio to hold a 10 day workshop with local architecture students. The workshop will be broken into 3 parts - LEARN, DESIGN, and BUILD.
We will begin with an intensive introduction to parametric design softwares such as Rhino Grasshopper and other Rhino based digital tools. As a part of this introduction, students will give back to Kickstarter patrons (you - who is making all of this possible), by designing rewards for them (look over to the rewards section).
Students will evaluate the user as a parameter for creating design interfaces, and mass customization techniques will emerge as the central strategy in connecting material and experiential processes. Fabrication will be studied as a complex process from the design stage to the construction stage, incorporating the participation of favela residents.
DIA phase 1 will explore multiple fabrication techniques using laser cutting, including fabric forming and puzzle joinery. An introduction to these techniques will be followed by team development of customizable user interfaces and fabricated prototypes of different iterations of the proposals. Local residents will be invited to participate by customizing their own prototypes using the systems developed by students in the workshop.
The research and work done at the workshop will be disseminated through a publication by AA (Architectural Association) Adaptive Ecologies, as well as exhibited at the Architectural Association (in London) "Project's Review" and WOOD 2010 'Architecture of Necessities' exhibitions.
We think that the real potential of this project lies in the power of collaboration. With the involvement of many people from different backgrounds, and by layering diverse ideas over time, we can collectively make tremendous improvements to living conditions in Rio and really make a positive impact on people's lives. Oh behalf of FABberz, LaN, and the workshop participants, we thank you in advance for your interest and support!
